St. John’s Lutheran Literacy Preschool
Your generosity provides safe and secure spaces for young children to develop a foundation for a lifetime of learning and a passion for literacy.
Founded with a mission to nurture the whole child, St. John’s Early Literacy Preschool believes in inspiring lifelong learning through a passionate commitment to early childhood education. Over the years, the staff has served countless children and been a vital resource to Madison County. Parents have often reported that their children enter kindergarten ahead of their peers, equipped with foundational reading skills.
In order to serve more families, St. John’s recognized that the facility required updates.
This summer, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Madison County Community Foundation, the preschool underwent a renovation to increase safety and brighten the space for children and families.
With the grant, St. John’s embarked on a project to remodel the front hallway of the preschool. The old carpeting, worn and outdated after more than 50 years, was replaced and a security wall was installed to provide a safe separation between preschool activities and the rest of the church. However, the impact of the grant reaches far beyond carpet and walls.
Connie Herndon, Director of the preschool, easily recalls stories of individual impact. One of the most rewarding stories is of a set of twins who were part of the very first preschool class. Both have since come back to give back and work as assistants.
Enrollment has increased at the preschool, but there is still space for more children to benefit. St. John’s Early Literacy Preschool primarily reaches low-income families in Madison County and serves Anderson, Alexandria, Lapel, Frankton, Pendleton, and Elwood.
